Australian Open
The Australian Open was the last grand slam tennis tournament introduced to the tennis season and the first event was held in 1905. The tournament has also been held at the Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia although the stadiums have seen huge improvements over the years. For over 80 years the Australian Open was played on a grass surface, but then in 1988 the surface was changed from grass to a hard court.
The event is held in January and is the first grand slam of the tennis season and always attracts restless tennis fans that have been waiting for the start of the season. Two of the stadiums at Melbourne Park have a retractable roof which makes the Australian Open one of two grand slam events that can potentially be played indoors. The only other grand slam with a retractable roof is the US Open.
The reason for the retractable roofs in Australia is because the tournament is held during the summer in Australia and it can be really hot outside. It also prevents matches from being rained out. Last year at the Australian Open they set record numbers for live attendance which was great to see for the sport of tennis. The surface used on the courts at Melbourne Park were changed in 2008 and it now uses a thinner surface which helps keep the court from getting to hot. The surface is very similar to the surface used at the US Open.
The payouts for this grand slam exceed the payouts for several other grand slams in tennis and this makes it one of the most exciting tournaments of the year to watch. In 2008 the best tennis players in the world proved they deserve to be the best as they had excellent finishes in the event. Nadal won the men singles event and Serena Williams won the women singles event.
Millions of dollars is wagered on the Australian Open every year and if you want to make some money then you’re going to need to do your homework. You will need to look at how the players ended the previous year because you won’t have much data to work with from the current year since the Australian Open is in January and is the first grand slam event of the year. With this being the first grand slam of the year every tennis player is looking to get off to a great start and it’s a tough competition to cap.
Many of the world’s best tennis players have actually stated that the Australian Open shouldn’t be in January because it’s too early in the year. Most tennis players take some time off around Christmas to spend with the family and thus aren’t 100% ready for this event. The tournament has remained in January however, and it doesn’t look like it will change. The Melbourne Park is currently about to start another $100+ million renovation, and the reason is because they want to ensure the event stays in Melbourne. Authorities have made it clear they would like the Australian Open moved to Glebe Island in Sydney, but there is still a lot of people fighting for the event to remain in Melbourne.
